Part VII: Erie Community School is "Casting" Our Future to the Wind
By Mike Ryan
December 18, 2006
I would like to use this article space to bring you up-to-date on our wind turbine project through the means of a slide show. This slide show will take you through the various construction phases we have seen and then I will share an update of future steps in our project timeline. I hope you enjoy the pictorial journey:
- Construction Site Sign
- Initial Foundation Preparation 42'X42'X8'
- Arrival of the Inbed Ring(weight 18,000 lbs. This is the locking ring for the turbines base section).
- Preparation of sub-foundation with rebar.
- Six (6) steel pillars used to hold the Inbed Ring in place. Steel wall forms surrounding the foundation site.
- Vertical rebar in foundation site.
- Within the vertical rebar there are multiple conduit tubes for various electrical and communication lines.
- The building of a road was necessary to enable large cranes to enter the site area and eventually for the arrival of the turbine sections.
- 100,000 lb. crane to lift the inbed ring onto the six (6) steel pillars.
- The lift and placement of the inbed ring on December 15, 2006.
From this day forward the following events are tentatively scheduled:
- December 18-21: Completion of the foundation site. All rebar in place and interwoven through the inbed ring.
- December 22: The pouring of the cement foundation. Fifty (50) to Ninety (90) cement truck loads (520 cu. yds.) poured continuously over a period of up to sixteen (16) hours.
- December 23 - January 5, 2007: The cure time for the cement site (approximately two(2) weeks.
- January 8, 2007 (approximately): The lower turbine section and the upper nacell section to be delivered to Erie.
- Prior to erection of the turbine the painting of the Erie CUSD #1 logo (Cardinal) will be painted on both sides of the nacell.
- Electrical connection work will be initiated from the turbine to the four (4) building sites.
I will continue to update site construction pictures and information as they become available.
Thank you for your continued interest in our wind energy converter project!
