Elementary Counselor: Individual Counseling

Individual Counseling Services

August 05, 2009

The Erie Elementary Developmental Counseling Program provides many services to help your child have an enjoyable and successful school experience. Individual counseling provides the one on one attention that elementary students enjoy when sharing concerns and is one of the most frequently used counselor interventions.

The goal of school counseling is for your child to have a more successful school experience. The elementary school years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self concept and their feelings of confidence. Decision making skills, peer communications, attitudes towards self and others, and character values are all beginning to develop in the lives of elementary age children.

Elementary school counselors are professional educators with a mental health specialty who respond to the challenges presented to elementary students. Furthermore, school counselors assist parents in making use of community resources, coordinate referrals to outside agencies, and maintain confidentiality. School counselors are trained to work with students individually for a number of concerns a student might present, such as: friendship concerns, playground concerns, challenges in coming to school, anger management, family changes and transitions, self esteem, to name a few.

Students are encouraged to discuss their feelings, concerns, and counseling goals with their parents/guardians after meeting with the school counselor. Communication between the school counselor and parent/guardian is recommended to help your child start off on the right foot and stay there all year long.
